Football in Portugal
For the first time football game was shown in Portugal during 1875 year. The first official match was played in 1894 year. Nowadays football in Portugal is governed by Portuguese Football Federation which also leads and organize Portugal National Football team, founded in 1921 year. Best position taken from national team in international tournaments is third place in FIFA World Cup during 1966 and forth place in same competition during 2006. In UEFA European Championship National Football team of Portugal have one 1st place and one 2nd place. Portugal takes 17th place in FIFA all-time table.
Football league system in Portugal is built by 3 divisions named:
- Primeira Liga – highest league division in Portugal formed by 18 clubs
- The second division is LigaPro also formed by 18 clubs
- the third division is divided in 4 groups, each group contains 18 clubs
Annual national football tournament is Taca de Portugal ( Cup of Portugal), which is knock-out football tournament. In this tournament participate all football teams in Portugal.
