Football in Latvia

Most popular sport in Latvia is ice-hockey but year after year, football became more and more watched sport. The football in Latvia is governed by Latvian Football Federation which organize every year national football tournament named Latvian Cup and controls the National team of Latvia. The national team never have been qualified for FIFA World Cup and only once participate in UEFA European Championship. Best performance of national team is in Baltic Cup – 13 cup won. Baltic Cup is international competition, organized in every two years between Latvia, Lithuania and Edtonia, and Latvia is the country which won this competition most.

Football league system is built by:

• Latvian Higher League (Virsliga), highest football division – 8 teams
• Latvian First League – second-highest football division – contains 14 teams
