Pressure Index & Delta Performance: The Trader's Edge in Live Football

How to read live xG charts, the Pressure Index, and Delta Performance (Δ) to find in-play trading opportunities before the odds catch up.

Most in-play bettors and traders react to the scoreline. The best ones react to what's underneath it — the flow of the game, which team is dominating, and whether the current score actually reflects what's happening on the pitch. ProSoccer's Pressure Index and Delta Performance (Δ) are built precisely for this: to show you who deserves to be winning before the market catches up.

The Live xG Chart: Your Starting Point

Every live match page shows a cumulative xG chart with three lines per team:

  • Home xG (solid blue) — actual expected goals accumulated by the home team so far
  • Away xG (solid orange) — actual expected goals accumulated by the away team so far
  • Expected curve (dashed) — the pre-match xG pace; what each team's xG should look like at this minute if the match followed the model exactly

The gap between the solid line and the dashed expected curve is the first signal. A team whose solid line is running above the dashed line is creating more danger than the pre-match model predicted — they're outperforming expectations. A team running below the dashed line is underdelivering.

Reading a Real Match: Górnik Zabrze II vs Polkowice

At minute 90, the score is 3–0 to Górnik Zabrze II. The live xG chart shows:

  • Górnik home xG: 1.45 (pre-match expected: 1.52)
  • Polkowice away xG: 0.80 (pre-match expected: 1.52)
  • Tempo tag: Balanced Tempo

The scoreline is 3–0, but Górnik's actual xG is only 1.45 — they've been clinical (scoring 3 from 1.45 xG, roughly 2× their expected output). Polkowice's xG of 0.80 vs a pre-match expectation of 1.52 tells us they drastically underperformed their own attacking potential — they should have created more but didn't. Both Delta values are negative (–0.090 home, –0.720 away), confirming both teams are running below their xG pace at this minute.

Trading insight: A 3–0 scoreline with the home team only generating 1.45 xG signals a score that flatters Górnik. If you were trading before the third goal, the home win price had already collapsed — the value was gone. The xG chart would have warned you early that this scoreline was partly luck-driven.

The Pressure Index: Moment-by-Moment Dominance

The Pressure Index is a 0–110 scale displayed as a bar chart below the xG graph. It shows which team is applying sustained attacking pressure at each minute of the match — not just who created chances, but who is controlling the game's tempo and territory.

The index is calculated from a combination of live data signals including attacks, dangerous attacks, shots, and territorial pressure. A reading above 70 is dominant territory control; below 30 is defensive or passive. Equal readings around 50 mean the match is genuinely contested.

Key insight: The Pressure Index frequently leads the scoreline. A team holding a Pressure Index of 85+ for 15 consecutive minutes is building danger that hasn't yet converted into a goal — but is highly likely to. This is where traders find edges.

Delta Performance (Δ): The Most Important Number on the Page

Delta Performance is displayed as HOME Δ and AWAY Δ below the xG chart. It is the single most actionable number for live traders.

Δ = Live xG − Expected xG at this minutePositive = team is overperforming their pre-match model. Negative = underperforming.

The pre-match model sets a pace: how much xG each team should have accumulated by each minute of the match. Delta tells you how far ahead or behind that pace each team currently is.

Interpreting Delta: Four Trading Scenarios

1
Home Δ strongly positive, Away Δ negative → Back Home / Lay Away
The home team is creating significantly more danger than expected while the away side is underperforming. The model is being beaten by the home team in real time. If the scoreline doesn't yet reflect this (e.g., still 0–0), the home win price may still be generous — a prime back-to-lay setup.
2
Both Δ negative → Over market opportunity
Both teams are underperforming their expected xG pace. The match is slower than the model anticipated. If the score is still 0–0 with both teams below expected xG by a large margin, the Over 2.5 price may be drifting — but the underlying model still expects goals. This can be a value back on Over at inflated prices.
3
Both Δ positive → Goals are flowing, trade with the market
Both teams are outperforming their expected xG. It's an open match, goals are likely on both sides. Lay the draw if it's 0–0, or look for BTTS opportunities.
4
Large negative Δ on the team that's winning → Scoreline unsustainable
The leading team is winning but underperforming their xG. They may have scored from a set piece or counterattack without generating sustained dominance. The trailing team may have a Δ that shows they're actually the better side. This is classic "wrong winner" territory — lay the current leader if odds are still workable.

Real Match Example 2: Nepean vs South Coast Flame

Score: 1–1 at minute 90. Live data:

MetricNepean (Home)South Coast Flame (Away)
Live xG2.081.53
Pre-match xG1.071.43
Delta (Δ)+1.010 ↑ Overperform+0.100 ↑ Overperform
TempoOpen Game

This is a fascinating match. Nepean's pre-match xG was only 1.07 — the model expected them to be the weaker attacking side. By minute 90, they've generated 2.08 xG, a Delta of +1.010. They have massively outperformed their model — they've been the far more dangerous team in actual play. South Coast Flame came in with a 1.43 pre-match xG expectation but generated 1.53 — roughly in line (+0.100).

The result is 1–1, but Nepean's dominance in live xG means they deserved to be winning. A trader watching the Δ from minute 60 onward would have known Nepean was the better team on the night — and could have laid the draw at lengthening prices or backed Nepean at a price that didn't reflect their actual performance.

Combining Pressure Index + Delta: The Full Signal

Used together, these metrics are more powerful than either alone:

Pressure IndexDelta (Δ)Signal
High (70+)Positive (+)🔥 Strong — team is dominating AND overperforming xG. Back them aggressively.
High (70+)Negative (−)⚡ Opportunity — dominating but xG not yet converted. Goals incoming. Back Over or team win at current price.
Low (30−)Positive (+)⚠️ Caution — overperforming despite low pressure. Likely getting goals from set pieces or luck. Unsustainable.
Low (30−)Negative (−)❌ Avoid — team is passive and underperforming. Lay if leading.

Practical Trading Workflow

  1. Open the match page — check the xG chart immediately. Is either team running significantly above or below the dashed expected curve?
  2. Check the Pressure Index bars — identify if there's a consistent dominant team over the last 10–15 minutes, not just in one burst.
  3. Read the Delta values — this is your key number. A large positive Δ on a team means they're outplaying the model. A large negative Δ flags an underperformer.
  4. Cross-reference with the scoreline — if the scoreline and Delta disagree (e.g., a team is winning but has a negative Δ), the market will eventually correct. That gap is your trading opportunity.
  5. Set a clear exit — define your trade-out trigger before you enter. Price correction after the next goal or after minute 75, whichever comes first.

Tempo Tags: Context for Your Read

Each match also displays a Tempo tag that classifies the current match flow:

  • Balanced Tempo — both teams trading chances at a similar rate; open market, any result possible
  • Open Game — high xG pace on both sides; goals are flowing, favour Over markets and BTTS
  • Dominated — one team is controlling possession and pressure heavily; favour that team's win market
  • Slow Burn — low xG pace, both teams below expected; Under markets become attractive

Tempo context prevents you from misreading an "Open Game" Δ spike as a single team's dominance — both teams may be overperforming in an end-to-end match.
